The woman who pushed her 16-year-old friend off a 60-foot bridge could be facing up to one year behind bars after being charged with one count of reckless endangerment.

Taylor Smith, 18, sent pal Jordan Holgerson plunging into a river after shoving her off the bridge in Washington state, US, leaving her with multiple injuries.

Prosecutors filed the charge yesterday as an officer said her actions "created a substantial risk of death and resulted in serious physical injury to Jordan Holgerson."

Reckless endangerment is punishable by up to a year in jail and a maximum fine of £3,900.

Earlier, Taylor - who family recently claimed 'didn't care about what she'd done - said facing charges is "scary" but she will "accept whatever the prosecutor gives me."

Taylor spoke out after the charge, telling ABC News: "I accept the charges maturely and all I can do is hope for the best for Jordan and myself," Smith told late Friday.

Jordan, initially said she 'didn't really want' Taylor to get into trouble but earlier this week she told NBC News : "I'm kind of wanting her to sit in jail and think about at least what she did."

She added: "I'm in a lot of pain. In the mornings it's the worst, like it hurts to breathe. My side hurts. My shoulder hurts. I can't even get up."

Jordan suffered serious injuries in the plunge, including six broken ribs, a punctured lung and air bubbles in her chest after she plunged the equivalent of three storeys into Lewis River at Moulton Falls Regional Park near Vancouver on August 7.

According to the complaint filed in Clark County district court, Jordan told authorities that Taylor was the one who pushed her and that it was unwanted.

Taylor admitted to pushing her off the bridge but told authorities she did so in an attempt to help her friend overcome her fear and not to injure her.

Earlier Friday Taylor said she didn't consider the repercussions beforehand, adding: "She wanted to jump and she was scared and she had asked me to give her a push, and I didn't think about the consequences.

"I thought she would be fine."

Taylor said she immediately "apologised several times" after the incident and even tried to visit her in the hospital but was "asked to leave."

Taylor could spend a year in jail

She said Jordan has since stopped speaking to her.

Jordan said she had initially wanted to jump off the bridge after seeing a friend do it, but she got scared when she got to the top.

She said: "She was counting down but I didn’t think anything of it. And I was like, 'No, don’t count down, like, I won’t go if you count down. I’m not ready.' And then she pushed me."

Jordan said she didn't feel any pain but adrenaline kicked in after she belly-flopped into the water.

But Taylor claimed she "never intended to hurt" her friend, adding: "I'm really sorry it turned out that way. I just pray that she heals and gets better."

Dramatic video footage captured Jordan falling dozens of feet from the bridge in Moulton Falls Regional Park, Yacolt.

The teenager could be seen standing nervously at the edge of the structure, before her pal, later identified as Taylor, pushed her from behind.

Surrounded by friends, she was reportedly heard saying "no" twice, before plunging into the Lewis River. She landed with a 'belly flop'.

Jordan sister, Vanessa, spoke to KOIN in Canada shortly after the incident.

"I think she [the friend] tried to do it jokingly and didn't think what could have happened," Vanessa said. "You don't really play around at 60 feet."

Ashley Mahree, who recorded the video and posted it on the site, wrote in the description: “This could have easily taken a life, and I think this girl needs to be held accountable in some way."

She added: "The person that pushed her should go to jail."

Although a sign at the site prohibits jumping and diving into the water, the bridge is popular among adrenaline junkies.

According to Clark County Fire Chief Ben Peeler, two to three injuries occur from jumping from the bridge every summer.

Kristie has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for her niece's increasing medical expenses following the plunge.
