KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Rinku Singh is among the four reserve players for 2024 T20 World Cup
  • Shubmam Gill is also part of the list
  • Rohit Sharma will lead Team India in the ICC event
The Ajit Agarkar-headed selection committee has unveiled Team India's 15-member squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Rohit Sharma will lead the Men in Blue in a T20 WC for the second time and will be assisted by Hardik Pandya. There were a couple of surprising inclusions and exclusions from the WC team.
Rinku Singh's exclusion was probably the biggest surprise. The left-handed batsman has always performed in T20Is since his debut and finished the games for Team India. But he was pipped by Shivam Dube, who can also chip in with some wickets when needed.
Rinku though has been named in the list of reserve players and he can be called up to replace a player if there's a need. Not just Rinku, India have named as many as 4 players in the list of reserve players.
Shubman Gill is the second reserve player in the list. The opening batsman was in contention for a place in the main squad and performances in IPL 2024 would have forced the selectors to retain him. But Shubman hasn't performed as per the standards set by him.
The Gujarat Titans captain has managed 320 runs in 10 matches at an average of 35.55. He has batted with a strike rate of 140.96.
Khaleel Ahmed is back in contention and he is the third player in the list of reserve players. The Delhi Capitals pacer has been among the wickets in IPL 2024. Being a left-arm pacer is always a boon in Indian cricket and Khaleel could get his chance after the WC too. He has 12 wickets in 11 matches in the ongoing IPL season.
Avesh Khan is the fourth player in the list. Playing for Rajasthan Royals, Avesh has scalped nine wickets in as many matches. He has seemingly pipped his teammate, Sandeep Sharma in the list. Sandeep has done well in the ongoing season.
It remains to be seen if Khaleel and Avesh travel with the team or not. The pacers in the reserve list mostly travel with the team for a few matches.
With an eye on their second T20 WC trophy, India will kick off their campaign against Ireland on June 5. They will take on arch-rivals, Pakistan in their second match on June 9. India will be up against the United States and Canada in their next two matches on June 12 and 15, respectively.
