British royal family news divulges that Prince William raised eyebrows by hiring his late mother Diana’s former divorce lawyer—is there something royalists need to worry about?
According to The Daily Mail’s Richard Eden, William the Prince of Wales appointed Mishcon de Reya to manage the legal matters for himself and his family. Mishcon formerly represented Diana in her divorce from William’s father, King Charles in 1996.

Hello! described William’s hire as a “a clear departure” from King Charles’ “long-standing legal team” of Harbottle & Lewis (the firm of choice for the royal family for decades) which includes attorney Gerrard Tyrrell.
Eden thinks that William’s hiring decision signals his desire to go his own way and “be his own man.”
When the royal couple separated in 1992, the firm’s Anthony Julius was chosen by Diana to represent her during her ugly divorce from Charles, which came one year before her death in an auto accident on August 31, 1997 in Paris.
Diana and Charles’ Contentious Divorce
In 1992 it was then-U.K. Prime Minister John Major who announced Charles and Diana’s separation.
At that time he told the House of Commons: “This decision has been reached amicably, and they will both continue to participate fully in the upbringing of their children.” At the time Prince William was 10 years old, and Prince Harry, 8.
The divorce came on the heels of Diana’s controversial 1995 BBC with discredited Martin Bashir in which she bashed Charles and the woman who would become his second wife, Queen Camilla, for cheating.

William is considered a moderate royal, one who understands tradition at the same time seeking to modernize where necessary. He spoke to his ambitions in 2024 in Cape Town, South Africa while attending his Earthshot Prize Awards.
On that occasion he said “I’m trying to do it differently and I’m trying to do it for my generation. And to give you more of an understanding around it, I’m doing it with maybe a smaller ‘r’ in the royal, if you like. That’s maybe a better way of saying it.”

In particular, William emphasized his wish to combine “impact, philanthropy, collaboration, convening, and helping people” into an overarching philosophy.
He added that both he and Princess Catherine want to engage with other with “more empathetic leadership around the world” and thus far neither has made a misstep.
